Requirements of Our Program
Pre-requisites for the Alternative Certification Program include:
- An application fee of $100
- A baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution
- Must be considered highly qualified by the State of Texas
- A 2.5 GPA on a 4.0 scale in the last 60 hours of coursework taken or a 2.75 GPA all courses directly related to the applicant’s teaching field. EC – 4 Generalist candidates must show college credit in math, English, social studies, and science. Secondary candidates must show college credit or its equivalent of successful hours completed in his/her teaching field.
- Submission of official college transcripts
- THEA scores or evidence of exemption or remediation:
- Math 230
- Reading 230
- Writing 220
- Clear criminal background check
- Interview successfully
- Proof of English Language Proficiency
- Earned a college degree in the U.S. or
- Successfully complete a standard interview in English
- Two (2) letters of recommendation from professional sources, i.e., employers, supervisors, teachers, professors, or school administrators. These must be submitted with the application.
- A completed application with the appropriate application fee
- Appropriate score on TeacherInsight instrument.
The required coursework in the pre-service training will vary depending upon type of certification sought.
During the first year of internship, all teachers will be required to take 3 online courses, attend TxBESS and TESA training, and observe practicing classroom teachers for a minimum of 30 hours.
