5.A. Designing Lesson Plans I - 3 hr
The historical and legal basis for educational programs to address the needs of diverse learners will be reviewed—including NCLB, IDEA, ADA (Section 504) and relevant state law and rules. Interns will gain knowledge of the specific requirements schools must meet for students with disabilities, English language learners, migrant students, and students who are gifted and talented. Programs discussed will include special education, at-risk, 504, bilingual/ESL, dyslexia, and gifted/talented.
Various methods of modifying the curriculum, formative assessment, varying strategies, and instructional delivery will be explored with the goal of providing interns with the knowledge and capacity to design a multi-level lesson based on the TEKS.
5.B. Designing Lesson Plans II - 6 hr
Interns will learn how to plan lessons directly related to TEKS and learner objectives, with TAKS and Benchmarks in mind.. A rudimentary introduction to the lesson cycle will be stressed. This all takes place within the confines of the candidate’s content area.
- In the Language Arts classroom 6 hr
- In the Math classroom 6 hr
- In the Social Studies classroom 6 hr
- In the Science classroom 6 hr
6. Delivering Instruction - 3 hr.
Candidates will be taught how students learn, and how they are motivated by the classroom environment and climate, and why demonstrating knowledge of student, demonstrating flexibility and responsiveness, engaging students in learning, questioning strategies, proximity to students, re-teaching, and a knowledge of the lesson cycle and assessment techniques are all important.
7. Reading Strategies Across the Curriculum - 3 hr
Students need to have a variety of strategies that can be effectively used before, during, and after reading. The metacognitive strategies taught through the instructional techniques of modeling, sharing, guiding, and applying will include summarizing, connecting, questioning, inferring, determining importance, visualizing and monitoring understanding.
8. Assessment and Record Keeping - 3 hr
Interns will become familiar with formative and summative assessment, norm-referenced tests, criterion-referenced tests, and standards based tests, and when each is appropriate. Also stressed in this session is keeping up with grading and record keeping for student information, parents, and UIL.
Additionally, the importance of recording and dealing with absences and tardies will be emphasized.
Candidates will learn to effectively deal with students, parents, colleagues, administrators, mentors, community members,.
They will understand that communicating clearly and accurately, contributing to the school and district, seeking professional growth opportunities, and demonstrating professionalism and ethics are expected.
10. First and Second Language Acquisition for School Success - 3 hrs
(Bilingual/ESLGeneralist EC-4 only)
This session emphasizes the process of first- and second-language acquisition development and its impact on the linguistic and academic achievement of English Language Learners. (for ESL/Bilingual only.)
11. Bilingualism/Biliteracy - 3 hrs
(Bilingual Generalist EC-4 only)
This session provides an examination of the theoretical foundation, methods, and materials for literacy and biliteracy instruction in a dual language instructional setting.
12. Individualized Education for the Student with Disabilities - 3 hrs
(Special Education EC-12 only)
Interns will learn the nine specific disability categories addressed in federal law (IDEA) including characteristics and instructional recommendations for each. Other requirements of an individualized education plan will also be covered including transition, assistive technology, extended school year, discipline and least restrictive environment among others. (for Special Education Only)
